Guildford Rd, Woking

Guildford Road, Woking┬áis a prime central site extending to 1.3 hectares previously occupied by a series of run-down former Government offices adjacent to the town centre and close to Woking rail station. The aim was to design a mixed residential and commercial quarter with a focal building and opportunties to enhance the public realm along the A320 Guildford Road, creating a gateway into Woking. A landmark tower and urban boulevards became the focal design features for the site which comprised 467 residential units and 6000 square metres of commercial floor space. Community engagement featured heavily in the planning process with community workshops and exhibitions held to ensure that the design, form and scale of development received input and support from the community. The creation of high quality public spaces, community facilities and opportunities for public art featured heavily in the responses by communtiy representatives. The successful outcome of this site, which is currently under construction, is a testament to the┬áinclusive approach adopted by the landowner and developer and the positive negotiations that were undertaken despite significant issues associated with the site’s proximity to the Thames Basin Heath Special Protection Area.
